K5iiS + DA16-85mm + Kiteboarding
3

With my K5iiS and DA 16-85mm, I stumbled across the 16th Annual Bridge of the Gods Kite Festival at Stevenson, WA in the Columbia River Gorge. Because the course brought the kiteboarders close to shore 85mm was enough of a telephoto to capture the action. I needed a shutter speed over 1/300s to stop the action. I'll let the images do the talking about how well it all (AF, sharpness, etc.) worked. I used both single and machine gun shooting in RAW and did fill up the buffer once.

Enjoy!

The Columbia River was crowed with moving objects. The sternwheeler goes up and down the river between the lower two dams. The wind was between 10-25 knots.

The kites have air fill tubes in front to give it structure and sail cloth does the rest. Very simple but effective. The number on the kite tell the size. This was an eight meter kite.

Love the surrounding area.

Nice water drops.

He made it looks so easy, even the landings.

Four contests per heat of 6 minutes? with three judges rating each trick. The men could easily go 10 meters+/- in the sky.

The kiteboarders were in good shape but it is not a strength contest. A quick turn would help launch you.

Best viewed at Original size.
