Thanks for the examples. In my eyes the biggest problem with that second photo is movement. Movement of the car, movement of the camera or both.

It's good to read about how AF works. For instance, if the camera chooses the AF point it will choose the point with enough contrast that is nearest. Choosing the AF point yourself helps in that respect for most of the 'front focussing issues'.
One option is to prefocus at a point where the car will be (one shot AF, half pressing the shutter button, or MF) and shoot as the car is there.
