Who Chose the 300 f4 over the 100-400 for Birding and Why?

I probably misread your statement about a zoom allowing you to get closer. In this comparison you are right of course.

But with the MC14 on the 300mm you have 420mm.

In some nature preserves where I shoot large birds are very habituated to humans and will land within a few feet. And if you try to back up you may get eaten by an alligator

If I back up I might step on a snake!
