You are the first one I've seen who thought the 300 and MC-14 made the 300 too slow in midday. I have never considered that - so thanks for that input.

Maybe I need a 4WD Boat to get closer?

I just posted an example of needing the 300mm f4 in good light, I stopped using the MC14 after a few minutes in order to lower the ISO. You need to keep the ISO low, especially if you need to raise darker areas in PP. Unfortunately not an unusual problem with bird photography.
