I think there are many different types of photographers. Some purely enjoy the experience of taking photos (and may or may not take great photos). Others love the technical aspect, the gear, the image quality, post processing, etc. I probably lean towards this end of the spectrum. And I think most compromise somewhere in the middle with the best gear for them in terms of fit, feel, cost, while still offering great IQ. There is often the argument that m43 is more than enough for great photos, or APS-C is, or full frame is plenty compared to medium format. The truth is great photos can be taken with a cell phone. But everyone has there needs and you have to figure out where you wish to compromise.

All examples of an indulged hobby. And, apart from escalating consumerism, the OP chooses to spend his leisure fund on this, as is his right. I indulge a bit too....

d70...d90....d800e...Sony a77...Sony a99...d810*...d3s...only em1*....d4s

currently have d4s and em1 both 'lensed up' for birds and wildlife. I don't regret this for a bit, it is a hobby, don't smoke, drink little, no experimental pharmacology....

i need to find a way to buy time..that is my limiting factor.

fwiw, d810, high mpix did not always capture more detail because in rainforests and woods the need for high iso kills. 16mpix is a better balance...esp with fast lenses (em1) or amazing sensor (d4s)

i though the OP captured initial reactions, but a few more days, one great opportunity could tip the balance.

lastly, aesthetically...form, appearance, lenses, ease of portability...the em1 is captivating. I will of course look at the em1 mk 2, but from hobby indulgence, not dissatisfaction.

this balanced out to an interesting thread...
