A little hands on with the X-T2 today (sorry, a bit long)

We're very lucky here in Portland, OR to have a first rate camera store (Pro Photo Supply) that seems to be well connected with Fujifilm. A rep visited the store with a couple of X-T2s in hand, including the battery grip, and allowed people to handle it. Since it's still using preproduction firmware, we were not allowed to take any images with us. However, since I got there pretty early, I wasn't rushed and was able to play with it (on and off) for 15-20 minutes at least. A few impressions:
- I really didn't notice the size difference at all. It handled and felt very much like my X-T1, with of course the well documented changes to the controls.
- AF seemed very responsive. We were using a 16-55 lens, but later changed to a 100-400 at my request (since that's what I'm mostly using these days). AF was quite a bit slower, even in good light, which is not surprising since the lens was the limiter here, not the camera. I had no trouble with hunting even when aiming at a very poorly lit area. That's quite encouraging, though admittedly not a very rigorous test.
- OK, this might evoke a chuckle or two, but I loved the sound of the shutter. Very much reminiscent of a higher end DSLR and not at all jarring as the X-T1 can be at times.
- The menus have been completely reworked and seem far more intuitive and well designed.
- I really haven't used a grip before but was surprised at how nicely the camera balanced and felt with the grip attached, particularly with the larger lenses. The controls were fine, however the issue that has been pointed out in a few threads about the grip's shutter button being placed too far back in portrait mode was dead accurate. It's not all that uncomfortable, but you have to pull your index finger back a bit to hit the shutter since the button wasn't placed where your finger might normally sit when operating the camera. Hard to describe but everyone present agreed with this when trying out the grip (including the Fuji rep).
- Shutter speed with the grip is something to behold. It's VERY fast, smooth, and quiet. I see myself using the grip a lot when doing high speed shooting.
I have to say that I'm even more excited about the camera after having had a chance to play with it a little. I think Fuji may have really gotten it right this time and it feels like a very worthy upgrade. The key remaining concern will be how well it does with AF tracking. Some early tests have been encouraging but I'd like to see some serious BIF work done by some serious BIF photographers before getting too excited about the AF.
Hope this Is useful to someone. Was a really fun day (would have been more fun if they'd let me bring it home for a few days)
