My Moto X Pure runs Marshmallow and it has an app tray.

Thanks for the comment. It looks like there's more to this story.

Some Googling tells me that Marshmallow went to the new vertical-scrolling "app drawer," but LG elected to remove that entirely from the G5, reportedly to give a more iPhone-like experience. There were rumors that the app drawer was to be deleted from Android Nougat, too, but it looks like Google thought better of that.

A couple of months ago, LG rolled out its UX 5.0 update for the G5 that added a third option to the Home page configuration: one with an app drawer. At least for my US-based Verizon phone, that change wasn't included in the update. Other Verizon G5 users are saying the same. I've also seen some complaints that the AT&T version doesn't have it, either.

There already was a workaround in the form of an LG-provided launcher called LG Home 4.0 that gives an Android 4 experience. That launcher has to be downloaded directly from LG -- it's not available on the Google Play app store.

I've long since reorganized everything into folders, and I'm leaving them that way rather than seeking out a new launcher and rearranging yet again.
