The struggle: E-M10mkII vs GX85
Jul 16, 2016
Fear not, I've already used the Search function xD
I currently own a Canon 6D with a decent set of lenses, and a SX50 bridge camera to drop in my backpack for cycling trips, quick hikes etc. etc.
What I noticed is that my life would be much, much easier if I could add something "in between" the full frame and the bridge camera. A system that I could carry with me during multi-day trips, offering a useful focal range and general good all around performance. Last year I already owned the old Panasonic G3 and I really liked the M43 experience. I sold it at a small profit and I kept my eyes on the M43 world to see future developments.
Currently the cameras that seem more interesting for me are:
a) Gx85 (or your regional equivalent)
b) E-M10 mkII
c) G7
The tricky part is that here in Taiwan the prices for Panasonic gear are adjusted at a much lower rate than Olympus. For example, at B&H a Gx85 with kit lens is 800$ and an E-M10mkII with 14-42 is 700$. Here, the Panasonic would cost me 750$ while the Olympus sits above 800$. The G7 can be found for 450$ body only, so while a bit bulkier it's probably the best M43 body I could buy in terms of value.
Considering that in general a Panasonic-centric system would be more wallet friendly for me, as well as allowing me to benefit from dual-image stabilization for some lenses, do you have any suggestion?
I never use video, which is something that would push me towards Olympus, but the better value of Panasonic and the fact that the Gx85 added many stills-related features makes it much harder for me.
