And I would disagree with you and agree with JeanPierre, I use the 40-150 f2.8 for 90% of my outside portrait shoots for my business and am very very happy with the bokeh. One thing I may add is if you are using continuous autofocus your bokeh will suffer in quality, this could be your problem.

I'm going to have to ask you to explain this one. I've never had this issue with the 75 1.8 using C-AF, nor any of my Canon lenses. Additionally, I can induce the exact same behavior using single AF; it's almost purely a function of focal length, subject distance, and distance to the background.

Second, I don't doubt you have no issues with bokeh for portraits. Portraits tend to be taken at closer focus distances where this doesn't really pop up. It's mainly an issue when the subject is at moderate distance.
