Re: Focusing ... valuable to read Roger C's LR series

Oh, I forgot a biggie: focusing accuracy and repeatability.

Some years back Roger C. at LR did a whole series on evaluating manual and AF performance.

My recollection of what I consider one of his most interesting and valuable series was something like:

  • There is a significant learning curve to doing "best practice" on manual AF.
  • There are differences with CaNikon ... and no doubt Sony.
  • What works best on one model may not be same for other models, especially as technology advances.
  • Once the learning curve is mastered for a specific model and lens, and with sufficient attention to detail, magnified manual AF can be the most accurate. Maybe.
  • There were bigger than expected variation is AF quality. (understatement?)
  • AF quality, including speed, differed significantly with different lenses, especially newer Canon lenses.
  • Overall, AF is something of a "black box" full of mysteries.

Roger that ... ??

Sorry, don't have the link to the start of the series handy.
