Heat waves

I took a closer look at your example now , I'm seeing "blur" problems with the entire left half of the picture that also comes in on lower center part of the picture, noting how much sharper the grey bushes in lower right are compared to lower left, is it a de-centered lens ?
Did I miss anything obvious (or anything not so obvious..) ?

i think you got it pretty well, what is weird with those lenses is that the oof mushy areas like that left side come and go with aperture changes... i tested four of the 35/1.4 lenses, they all had big potential at f/1.4, but got weird like that off and on up until f/8 or so.

the far mountains didn't help me much either, what i look for is text, like address numbers and signs... one downside to that test scene is heat waves coming up off of the freeway, it's really visible with longer glass.

the phillip reeve testing doesn't work for me either, it's too far away, with lots of haze and such.

Dan and I frequently disagree, but I'm with him on this: heat waves are a great way to invalidate a lens test. I have several times lost an afternoon's work to them. Now what I do is mount a longish (200 mm or more) lens, aim it at the target, zoom in to max magnification, use a loupe on the LCD, and watch for wiggles. If I can see them, I test some other time, go go to my basement and use a razor blade and Imatest.
