The white halos (while not physically correct) make you believe the diffuse light just overradiates the background stars. Having a black halo just irritates me a bit (reminds me of planetary nebulae that have blown away all the gas around them).

Hi Michael!
Can't be more realistic than right now - I took the halos from the original, untouched stacking file and blended them in - so they are  as recorded.
