If I understand it correctly, the 55-300WR lens I use, and enjoy on my K-50, is not compatible with the new K-70. However, my 18-135WR is fully compatible and will give AF when shooting video.

So, to have a functional long zoom on the K-70, I will need the "new" 55-300WR?

Wrong! All up today existing Pentax lenses will work with the K-70. But the newest DA55-300 and very likely others which will follow, equipped with the KAF4 mount, will not work with the older Pentax bodies, because they do (will) not have the moving lever, which controls the aperture blades.

You are correct, of course. Specifically, the K-70 should be able to drive the new lens (and future KAF4 lenses) on delivery, while other cameras released in 2014-2016, K-S1, K-S2, K-3II, and K-1, will need firmware updates to handle KAF4. (Which haven't arrived yet, last time I checked).
