A new shutter in GX85

So, why and when to use different anti-shock settings.

Why not just leave at 0 ? I have Pen F and leave it all the time at 0

I usually leave my E-M5II at 0 anti shock as well.

Longer anti-shock is useful as it removes the shutter press twitch as well - can be useful with telephoto if exact timing not necessary. Like a very short self timer to remove camera movement from pressing the shutter.

"Silent" or fully electronic shutter has been shown to be even slightly sharper with a few lenses at certain shutter speeds than 0 second anti shock but then you've got rolling shutter artifacts to deal with.

I honestly can't remember any direct benefits to "normal" shutter but I thought there were some features or frame rates that might not be available with 0 second anti shock on some cameras. The other issue is that in theory with a very wide aperture lens at high shutter speeds EFCS (that is 0 second anti shock) can lead to both exposure errors and a slight difference in exposure across the frame. This is because the mechanical shutter and on sensor electronic shutter are at different points in the optical path.

And, why no anti-shock setting on newer Panny cameras? Like GX7 forward.

Good question. Panasonic seemed to thing electronic shutter was a sufficient answer but it really isn't. Rolling shutter artifacts and in many of their cameras lower DR when using the electronic shutter. They did implement effectively 0 second anti shock (EFCS) in the GM cameras but their mechanical shutters are also much slower making the mechanical/electronic curtain synchronization perhaps easier?

Now there is a new design shutter for GX85 (GX7-II) and basically shutter shock could be effectively minimized (can't say completely eliminated yet which need longer time, and more users to explore it). If finally it works, it would be a better solution without any sort of constraint or condition.

In general it seems many of these camera companies form an internal opinion about what their users need or don't need and are very stubborn to respond. Canon is legend at that in particular.
