600D Battery Meter?

So it's well-known that when using OEM Canon batteries, the camera will report battery charge at Full, and then increments of I guess 30% or so down to Dead. And when using generic batteries, they will display as Full and then suddenly register as Dead once depleted, owing to apparently not having a chip in the battery to communicate actual voltage (or remaining mAh capacity?).

So, what I'm wondering is, does that camera itself have some sort of basic voltage meter built in that can look at cell voltage, to give you that Full/Dead reading on generic batteries? It must, right? Or are aftermarket batteries actually equipped with a "chip" that simply reports Full/Dead, and OEMs report percentages?

As an aside, I just bought an Energizer LP-E8 equivalent battery to use in tandem with my OEM LP-E8 in a Neewer aftermarket grip. I'll be curious to see if the camera will indeed display voltages like it would with the OEM battery on its own.

Thoughts? Experience?

Thanks in advance!
