Since I have the G1X-II I researched this when I first bought the camera.  What you say is correct -- but only for the 4:3 aspect ratio, which is the sensor size.  That one does get less than the MK1 just as you report.

However, if you shoot in 2:3 or 16:9 mode, the sensor image of the G1X has to crop off the top and bottom of the image to get there, while the G1X-II just repositions the image in its multi-aspect ratio light circle such that the two cameras now have identical megapixels and crop factors.

So, bottom line, the G1X has the advantage when you shoot in 4:3 mode -- and that is the one that is usually quoted, since that is the full sensor, and as good as you can get.  But,  if you shoot in 2:3 mode, then both cameras make the identical size image.  Interesting I think.

To me, they are both wonderful cameras.  They each have their advantages.  One of these days I will also pick up the MK1 and have both.
