Does anyone know the cost and general turnaround time of replacing the front element of a 100-400 mk1? I was shooting with it yesterday and noticed it was really scuffed and scratched

I just had my 100-400L II front element replaced; cost was about £250 of which less than £100 was the glass, the rest was labour and 20% VAT.

Wrong country and wrong lens, but could give you a ball park idea at least.

I am interested to know from the OP and you Steve how you managed to damage the front element.

There is a deep lens hood and it takes a lot of effort to scratch the glass , no?

I put the camera/lens on the ground while using another body/lens, in an area where pine trees had been felled. Some kind of contamination, including pine sap I imagine, got on the lens and I couldn't remove it. FWIW the hood was fitted at the time, as it always is, but fate found a way to defeat that.

I am in the pro-filter side...

I never use filters and this hasn't changed my mind. It's not about cost, but even if it was, £250 wouldn't buy top quality clear filters for all my lenses.
