Oh, what a lovely thin-slice of focus!

I've coveted the Voigtlander lenses for a while now, and thanks to handling their 25mm a couple of weeks ago, I finally pushed the button on purchasing the 17.5mm. I have the Pana Leica for my 25mm needs you see...

But finally, I have the monstrous metal lens. And quite a beast it is. Very well-made, very chunky, and definitely a lens you want to mount on a body with a substantial hand-grip (such as the GH4). I've only had a quick play with it, but I'm already loving some of the quirks:

  • Razor-thin focus
  • Very close focussing distance
  • Wonderful glow wide-open
  • Creamy OOF areas

Here are a few examples, all shot wide-open at f/0.95:

The lens focussed incredibly close. It says 6" on the barrel, but more like an inch from the front element. This image is clearly not in focus, showing the difficulty of manually focussing this lens wide open, and so closely too.

This image apply shows off the "glow" that the lens has wide-open. It also has a bit of a swirl in OOF areas.

Bokeh glow! Alpine flowers in the rockery out in the back garden. Despite being shot at 9pm, there's enough light coming in at f/0.95 for this to be shot at ISO200.

Cheers,
Paul
