Canon Powershot SX70 ~ Guesstimating Sept 15
May 31, 2016
I'm decidely posting this against my own usual dislike of conjecture, but it seems as though a few more Nikon P900s are showing up, and I know people will be wondering about the next Canon Powershot SX-?- very long lens model.
For your information:
Canon Powershot SX 40: announced Thursday, Sept 15, 2011
Canon Powershot SX 50: announced Monday, Sept 17, 2012
Canon Powershot SX 60: announced Monday, Sept 15, 2014
Canon Powershot SX 70*: watch around Thursday, Sept 15, 2016
*Of course, it does not have to be named "SX 70". It could be SX 100, or anything.
Nikon released its longest-lens-in-the-game P900 on March 2, 2015.
Nikon tends to release "modification models" about a year apart, viz:
Nikon Coolpix P500: announced Feb 9, 2011
Nikon Coolpix P510: announced Feb 1, 2012
Nikon Coolpix P520: announced Jan 29, 2013
Nikon Coolpix P530: announced Feb 7, 2014
Nikon Coolpix P600: announced Feb 7, 2014
Nikon Coolpix P610: announced Feb 10, 2015
…so a Nikon P910 would already be "late" but who knows what Nikon might want to do with that?
Just about as soon as the Nikon P900 was released, a very big distribution problem occurred, and the P900 was just not showing up in retail camera stores. (I wish Nikon had told us the truth about what must have been a very interesting reason; CERTAINLY not Nikon's "didn't know it would be so popular" very very lame excuse.)
Now, at last, there are indications the P900 may become more readily available. I think people who are really interested in cameras such as the Canon SX50 and the Nikon P900 are going to be wondering whether to pay a lot of money for the 2-pound Nikon, which is now over a year old, or to see what Canon might offer.
Of course the sensor will be the same mini size, I should say right away, as the tiny sensor ENABLES the practicability of the extremely long lens. (You know, in the under-$million, 1-tonne-tripod user market.)
But will Canon produce a smaller, lighter very long lens camera than the Nikon P900? Or is the bulk going to have to be as big as Nikon made it?
And the minimum focus distance: Nikon's big lens likes to be 16 feet from its subject. Can Canon do better? (Of course both cameras can focus to almost-touching, but—as to be expected—not at full telephoto.)
And of course there is the question of a hot shoe and/or RAW.
And the price.
For now, I'm not guessing any of the above. I waited for Canon's SX60, but when it came I took mine back and returned to using my SX50. I really like Nikon's P900, but I didn't place it costworthy "over and above" the SX50 I already had. (That would depend how wealthy a person is. I'm not. )
I'm just watching for Canon's next move on the chessboard. Let's see what is happening September 15th.
