Re: Which zoom (55-200 or 50-230)

I ended up buying the 55-200. It arrives Friday. I leave next week for a business trip to chile/Argentina. I might bring it along with the 18-55 and 27 f2.8. Let's see how much I have to carry.
Congrats on the new lens. What this thread really shows us is how lucky we Fuji users are. ave they turned out a great list of lenses for their customers or what? Remember when we started with just the 18, 35, and 60? They promised a nice set of glass that would cover the range and man they have delivered.
I agree with the other poster and I think it's obvious that Fuji has used the same glass in all their lenses. You can tell this by simply looking at many samples from all the lenses, they all look like they use the same quality of optics. Whatever process they are doing, the cutting, the buffing, shaping, all that stuff, all these lenses are getting the same glass.
Yeah, the elements and such make a difference too i'm sure, but when you go look at a hundred samples from the 55-200 and 18-55 (which I own) and compare to the XC lenses I see no appreciable difference in IQ. Is there some? probably, as has been said, more elements and work on the corners and such. But you can still tell the glass is the same in all of them.
To me this is what is so awesome about Fuji. They have not used a cheaper glass in any of their lenses, and I don't know if any other company has done this for their customers. There is a consistently good look across all their lenses and it's the one huge reason I am a serious fanboi.
The others can point to the Fuji 16 MP thing, the short life batteries, the slow AF, and pick at various things, but no other company has rolled out a better and more consistent lineup of lenses for a new line of cameras like Fuji has for the X line.
Now how about a few examples from the XC 16-50 since it was mentioned too. When you look at these it's just unreal that you can get this lens for not much more than a hundred bucks used and it even has OIS, are you kidding me? lol This lens is so much better than the Canon kit lens I first got that it isn't even funny.

The group is just filled wih astounding photos from the CHEAPEST lens Fuji makes for the X line. It seems impossible, but it's true. Can any other company offer up a 16-50 zoom like this with ois for 150 to 180 bucks new? I don't see how. Yep, I'm a fanboi. I love my 18-55, but if I didn't have it I would have no problem using and loving an XC 16-50 as I do my 50-230. Here's one of mine from it from a car window a couple weeks ago.
