Bill, I'm not sure where the idea came from that the Panasonic 100-400 is " pretty sharp wide open up to 300mm." I'll echo Tom that it's quite nice all the way out to 400mm (=800mm). I'm photographing scenes that I would have passed up before (400mm being my longest reach then).

Remarkably, this lens has a Minimum Working Distance of 3' 11" which produces wonderful rendering when you can get close.
