To those who have owned, or at least used, both: is there any appreciable difference in AF speed?

I had both. Yes, 55-200 focuses a lot better. In fact, focusing with 50-230 in slightly low light (ISO 1600-6400) was frustrating.

- was this a true A-B test where both lenses were tested at the same time and location?

- was the AF speed comparison made with both lenses using the same aperture?

Otherwise, there is no conclusion to be made.

That's certainly not true.  The whole point of paying for and carrying a lens with a larger maximum aperture is to use that larger aperture in low light.  The additional light often results in faster AF.  Insisting that they be compared at the same aperture is like saying the only way to fairly compare the capacity of a two gallon bucket to a one gallon bucket is to only fill the two gallon bucket with one gallon of water.  It makes no sense.
