Re: Sharpness is overrated

That said, i do agree that lens sharpness is totally overrated. For most photography, the tack-sharpness of the image is only a small part of it's total impact, which has more to do with choice of subject, composition, creative eye, post-processing, etc.etc.etc.

The obsession with sharpness only started when people were given the ability to see 100% crops of their images, which is irrelevant for most printing. Certainly camera companies, as Rockwell says, are happy about this as they are able to sell more and more very expensive lenses.

So true...

All of today's DSLR lenses are sharp! ...  >10x sharper than the human eye.

We ONLY see sharpness differences between lenses when magnified on computers to unrealistic sizes. Sizes we will never actually use. It's not relevant to anything meaningful in actual practice... So put the image back to sleep on your hard drive.

You'll never see it, use it, need it... Billboards maybe, but how many of you are actually shooting billboards or even poster sizes?

Sharpness is a non-issue in most cases today, yet it has become an unfounded obsession of the masses.

Get out and shoot! (Ken is absolutely correct, however unpalatable as he me be.)
