Re: Which zoom (55-200 or 50-230)

Hi,

some years ago I searched a Tele lens for general use and especially hiking. I had checked out several manual Minolta lenses and they were not really convenient to use (heavy, difficulties with focussing, no IS).

And I wanted to go for the 55-200, because of the metal mount and the better BQ I've read about.

But my local dealer had an offer for the 50-230. It was half the price of the 55-200, and I decided to give the lens a try (the lens was really cheap and i would have not have a big loss when selling it immediately).

My first impression: this lens is light. I really opened the box immediately, because i thought, that it was empty ;-). Balance on the E-1 is perfect. BQ is good and there are no loose parts, operation is very smooth.

It fits perfect in my hiking (camera-)backpack and adds only little weight to it.

Second impression: in bright light I had a fast AF. I thought it was even faster than the 18-55.

IS? Good. Very good!

And the pics?

Sharp! Nothing wrong with them.

Weaknesses: in really dim light, AF ist hunting and struggling. And background separation is sometimes not good (bird between twigs...). And the plastic mount might break if the lens falls on solid ground).

And: reach is sometimes not sufficient ;-).

I am pleased with this lens and I had 300 bucks left for another one (just waiting for a parcel to arrive with my new flashgun - I went for the Metz).

Regards

Tox
