Why is video is sharper still photos?

I am using a Canon Powershot SX60 HS to photograph distant nesting birds. I use lots of zoom (100x)  and a tripod. I'm extremely pleased with my results, both still and video.

However, I'm puzzled by the fact that my video images seem to be in slightly sharper focus than still photos.

I use the AUTO setting. I also use the 2 sec. shutter delay so as to reduce camera shake.

Any thoughts about what's causing this difference in sharpness?

Thank you.
