Re: Sony to Fuji: Not Such a Nightmare Story

Enjoyed reading your post.

My slow move from Sony to Fuji

Background: I've done over 500 Weddings since 1995. Do a lot of special event coverage and on location and studio portraits and an increasing number of still / video jobs. Got into Sony A6000 and Nex 5t trying to lighten the load, 8 -10 hour weddings carrying two Dslrs was getting too much.

Sony.

Really like my A6000, love the images using the 50mm 1.8, and the 18-105 ( which isn't just a good lens I find it to be a very good lens). I remain very impressed with the files (raw) coming out of this camera. If you are doing stills plus video, at the price range only the A6300 can touch it. I have been using the Nissin i40 flash and have been happy with it.

The A6300 is an upcoming purchase. What the a6000 has been great at: Bright to moderately lit Weddings and receptions, most Events except Sports and outstanding for still / video projects. Those projects are the reason for keeping a limited A6300 kit.

Where it is lacking: Off cameraTTL flash options, that is slowly improving and long lenses (somewhat improving the A6300 will make using my existing Canon L lenses a real option). Low light focus, just not there, have to carry a Dslr for those assignments. Non lossey Raw files. The menu system ..oh my! Battery life ..I carry 8 of them.

Support and camera repair...nah.

Fuji

I have a X-Pro1. Really like it. Has an old school semi range finder feel. The two main reasons for my plan to buy more into this system over the Sony: Support and out of camera Jpgs. Love the Jpgs out of it, really think it will cut down on my work load. Only use it with manual adapted lenses at this point. Waiting for the X-t2 and if it has the improvements I am waiting for; Fuji will become my primary system. I will likely purchase the 23mm, 55mm and the 90mm lenses. Areas that need improvement for my needs: Autofocus, TTL flash. High speed sync. There are those who say “well just use manual flash”. I am no stranger to manual flash, there is no TTL in my studio. But for a lot of assignments being able to use TTL just gets the job done when time is pressing in on you.

My X-Pro1: I needed an add-on handgrip to make it feel right. It a a big (by mirrorless standards) hollow feeling body. The camera is well made mostly metal, has a nice combination of dedicated dials and buttons although placement of the AE- and AF-L button isn't in the best location. Because I use adapted Canon and Minolta manual focus lenses it is front heavy. But I don't find that much of a problem. Did I mention how good the straight out of camera Jpgs are? Yeah. I have no idea how good or bad the auto focus system is ..but will soon.

Fuji has been very good about updating the system.
