It's not the sensor size; It's how you use it.

Seriously, why does it matter? There are many things in life that aren't based in truth yet we go on using them oblivious to the truth.

Why drive on parkways and park on driveways?

The most important thing to keep in mind is that they could have simply created some acronym for the sensor type, (CX or ZX or AC or whatever) and stated the actual size in mm. Henceforth that acronym would have been used to represent that sensor size. The fact that it's referred to as a 1-inch type sensor is really irrelevant to photography. It's just a name based loosely on an old specification for television tube sensors.
