I have the Canon 1000D (aka Rebel XS) with the 18-55 is lens.  Very good shooter.  Lens is sharp and gives you some zoom range.  My issue is that the kit is so bulky that i do not like hauling around the DSLR.  I usually use a Canon S120 even though the IQ and low light is not as good as my 1000D

i also have an original 50/1.8.  I like the large aperture, but i find the perpective too tight on a crop sensor camera.

The 24mmSTM/2.8 is the lens that I have always wanted.  The 35mm eqivalent is about 38mm which is about the perfect perpective to for me.  If a view looks good to my eye, i can shoot with that lens and i get the shot i want more or less.  Zooming with my feet with a fixed lens adds to the experience imo.

Up here in Canada, the 24mm came out at CAD$169.  I had hoped that it would eventually go on sale or be offered in Airmiles.  About 2 months ago, the price shot up to CAD$199 because of the CAD drop.  Last week, Canon had a sale at CAD$179.  I finally pulled the trigger.

So far I have been happy.   I think the 24mm will be the lens that i use 90% of the time.  Decent aperture. Sharp.  Very small and light on the 1000D.  I may lug and shoot the 1000D more now.
