Compact, sharp, cheap, fast... conventional wisdom dictates you could only pick two or three. But this lens has it all!

This lens allows me to use my EOS M in a handy belt holster pouch for quick deployment. Over the years, it's been great for impromptu candid grab shots. When the AF hits, I want nothing for IQ or subject isolation. Some cheaper fast lenses are sloppy, wide open but this one is good to go!

As a bonus, it gets in nice and close. I usually prefer telephoto for my product shots, but this 22mm can get you in there...

I used to have the Sony/Zeiss 24mm prime for my Sony. It is much more expensive and bulky, with very similar capabilities. (The Sony may actually be a bit softer, though I was not able to compare the two on sensors with the same resolution.) The Sony does win on AF speed and overall character. (Works nicer with the sun in the frame while the Canon renders a bit more like a P&S.) That didn't prevent me from selling the Sony eventually. I'm still using my cheaper jacket pocket champion!

So AF speed is a minus. I wouldn't expect durability at this price point - and weight. That said, mine has been going strong for almost 3 years, now. If this lens cost more I might have to deduct points here & there, but at $249, for what it does, it's a total no-brainer as far as I'm concerned. It didn't take me very long at all to get my money's worth in terms of fun and quality captures.

I post this review in part to promote this little gem and to shame other makers for not offering anything quite like it.

the small and cheap 22mm f2 is good
