Well it isn't an inherent brand fault. I shot with a Pentax K-x for 3 years without issue before selling it to a friend (who is still using it).  I also have an older K-r and a K-5II that shoot great.

That said, Pentax in America doesn't have really solid repair services at this time.

If you stick with the brand, I'd go with a KS2 new or a K5II used.  The higher end bodies tend to be a bit more rugged.   The K-50 was their bargain basement model (outside of a brief window when they had a K-500).
