A Better Zoom Lens... Time to Upgrade?

Hi Everyone:

I have been using the Sigma DC 17-70mm 1:2.8-4.5 zoom for several years now. I have an SD15. I recently had the opportunity to shoot a gypsy encampment in India. If I can't print my images sharply at 11X17 I don't consider an image successful. I know it is silly, but that is my craziness. In order to get that level of sharpness, I had to push the images a bit in post-processing. The pictures were taken at ISO400 and all were in the shade. Although I am fairly happy with the images (there was a bit of grain involved but that actually contributed to the atmosphere), I wanted to figure out how to get my images to the next level of sharpness. I am not ready to buy an SD1 Merrill. I just like the look of images taken with my SD15.

So I was thinking of upgrading my zoom lens instead. Or do I need to? Is the zoom I am using considered above average in image quality? Or is there another more contemporary zoom at that approximate range which would yield sharper images?

Thanks,

-Charles
