Without one, you could try...

...you could do the old-fashioned, but time-honored version of shooting brackets....by firing 3 or 5 shots, with the last couple exposed to give nice color to the sky.

A bit more work  in post, but you avoid some of the pitfalls mentioned above, and its what's been done since the early days of darkrooms and chemicals.
