Re: Low-Light Focus: Is it me, my speedlite, or my camera?

Thanks for posting that, Wilba. Good ammunition. He confirms most everything I've found. One quote I like is "... the depth of field is so deep [at 50x focal length] that a small 45° scale is poor at showing the position of the plane of focus." Remember, you also read that here.

LOL. It's well known that PDAF is not as precise CDAF, and that target is one of the ones that people complain about, but this is the first time I've heard the spherical aberration theory.

I've got some more to add after banging my head on this myself, and I also have my own target.  Maybe I'll get around to writing about it.  (Or knowing the argumentativeness of the Interwebs, maybe I won't.  ) But for now,I don't want to hijack the thread away from the OP's main problem.

TimLNJ, if you're still reading this, I don't really care what method you use to check your focus.  You can spend time and money on it if you want, but I gave you a quick method that you can use that should be accurate enough to diagnose your problem.  If the newsprint is too fine, print a few sheets of text with double that font size or use a tape measure.  You have a very large problem, and it should be easily found.

Good luck with this, and please get back to us if you have questions or when you find the problem.
