I prefer to do all extra work myself because I have all the control I need. HDR and panoramas are perfect examples. In AE bracket mode I take 3 shots, normal exposure and +-2 stops and that's usually good enough. If you need more, you need to do it manually. Takes more time, though. For manual bracketing I use A mode on the dial, measure light and get the shutter speed. You take that shot, then start multiplying and dividing shutter speed by 2, 4, 8...to get other exposures. That will give you +1, -1, +2, -2 stops, etc. For example, if normal exposure measures 1/100 sec, I'd also take 1/50, 1/200, 1/25, 1/400, 1/10, 1/800...

Either way, tripod is useful. Not a must for good light (those plane photos are took handheld).
