I don' know what the problem is with your G3X.
I captured our cat at full zoom and the lighting was not so good (ISO 800).
Have a look:

You do know that picture is taken close to lightlevel .... 11??
I guess Dutch is talking about lower levels..
Dutch... do you have a example from a picture that went wrong so we know what LV we are talking about?
Light levels arent the issue. I took a shot in a dark room at 600mm, f/5.6, 0.3s, ISO 6400 handheld.
It does have to do with the lightlevels, or do you/others even have the same issues at perfect daylight?
Oh hello, professor. Yes, as I said, going from large AF area to smaller AF area made the difference in macro focus. This was in sunlight.
It also does have to do (as you mentioned ) with the contrast of/in the subject. Some cams are more sensitive for it than other cams.
Yes, and considering we are talking about the G3 X, which you have no experience with but just love to add your nonsense, I already provided the correct advice.
Oh, and professor, I had the same issue with the TZ110 on focusing on a ship paint in daylight using pinpoint. Larger area solved that.
ie. lighting levels are not the issue. focus area/contrast and focus distance are the only 2 possibilities.
Well, what can i say? Some students are just not able to see the relation between Rules and Exceptions.
A cam that normally delivers 95% accurate/fast AF at lower lightlevels, and sometimes misses is for them the same as a cam that has AF trouble at lower light levels but sometimes acquire the AF.
For them, both these cams earn the same AF consistency. Not in my opinion, but sure you are entitled to have the other opinion.
Your assumption that I have no experience with the G3X is completely wrong, but again, as said, you are entitled to have your own opinion.
