For years my pocket camera was the fabulous S95. Then the wonderful little thing expired.
Now I'm shooting with the G9X, and I LOVE it! The 1" sensor gives fairly amazing detail for a little camera, the AF is quick and accurate, colors are natural to my eye, Of course, that all implies you're using proper technique when shooting.
And -- it's small! I repeat -- it's SMALL!
I mean, this is a compact camera, so you want it to be compact. Right? It easily goes into any pants pocket, including jeans, no problem, quick to deploy, and is very unobtrusive. It looks about like a cell phone. You won't disturb peoples' space when you're shooting with the G9X.
My only complaint is the slow frame rate in RAW mode. I often shoot HDR, and a slow frame rate translates to shifting frames. But that's a minor consideration. In JPEG mode, the frame rate is fine. And my large cameras easily shoot HDR and action when I need that. For full function, tilt screen and all the whistles, I'll pull out the D750. Or the D800E. But here's a dirty secret: I hardly use the big rigs these days, I get such good results from the G9X.
And it's effortless to carry. Because, did I mention? It's SMALL!
Yes, the touchscreen takes some getting used to. It's easy to accidentally touch a control while you're shooting, and change settings. you have to be aware. But many new cameras are going with touchscreens, so this will be a skill photographers are going to need to adapt to.
Overall, this is a wonderful camera. A real winner. I predict that Canon will do serial upgrades, like with the S series. It's great.
