Could have sold a stranger on Pentax
Apr 27, 2016
A friend of my brother in law asked him what camera and lens I used from posting some really infrequent images to facebook, etc because he liked some pictures and wanted to buy the same/similar kit. I believe the below photos were the ones in question.

I do like these pictures and think the combination of the 35mm f2.4 on my K-50 is pretty fantastic. I personally *like* the look of a sensor with strong AA filter intact, and IMO the classic Sony 16MP sensors fit that bill. On Facebook you have at most 2048px wide to impress, but IMO I think AA filtered digital captures that are downsized look best to me.
That said I made it clear, not knowing anything about the skill level of the person and making the assumption that they were a newbie, that even though I used the K-50 and 35mm f2.4, I told them it was a combination of more than just the gear (i.e. using bounce flash and working some Lightroom, etc) and that I would only purchase them on a great sale (which I essentially did), etc and that they should still consider Canikon as well depending on budget and needs, etc. I did this because I sort of feel that the K-50 as an 'enthusiast' camera requires a bit of knowledge about using PDAF, some tolerance for 'screw drive' AF or less than stellar video, etc. IMO the Pentax fits the bill for me, but I have no real idea if it does for anyone else. I had to shoot pictures of an indoor inflatable play ground with poor lighting and hyper kids, and even an EM-1 seemed to do ok with AF over my K-50, while I had to pre-focus. Still nailing 50mm 1.8 on APS-C is harder than 25mm 1.8 on MFT.

Anyhow having shot a lot of systems, I've never had anyone who didn't really know me, ask me what gear I used from Facebook (I don't consider myself anywhere as talented as most folk so to me it was flattering). But anyhow I did mention I used the K-50 and listed my lenses, said the KS-2 was another great option, but also suggested considering Canikon as well on a good sale (i.e. some Canon 80D's are being sold for a very good price with rebate and printer bundle).
Sort of mixed feelings, I think for APS-C Pentax is still one of the finest systems when it comes to pricing (the price of the 100mm f2.8 WR has only gone up significantly since I bought it, but its still the cheapest out there and the smallest/lightest). But with the least beginner friendly AF or screw drive motors and video that might give some 'newbies' buyer remorse (wasn't there one on the forums just a few weeks ago complaining about video?). To me Pentax is a brand more for folks that know exactly what they want...
