windows 7 not seeing my 600D

Hi all, my windows 7 is not seeing my camera. it wasn't seeing my camera for a long time. I was using my son's PC to get the pictures from my camera. but recently I upgraded it to windows 10 and now its not seeing it anymore. so now I'm screwed. In a previous post someone found an article that said:

Windows 7 does not recognize Rebel XT EOS. This is a really quick fix: Connect your Canon Rebel XT EOS to your computer via USB cord, turn you Canon Rebel XT EOS on, click menu on camera, go to the 4th menu which is tool settings, arrow down to communication, change setting from PC Connection to Print/PTP. Your Canon Rebel XT EOS should now show up in your devices and you should be able to see all of your photos. This fix takes about 1 minute to do and solves all of your problems. Don't know why Canon does not have this info on their website. Enjoy your memorable photos on your new computer.

my problem is that my 600 doesn't have this communication setting.  my firmware is 1.0.1.   do I need to upgrade the firmware to get this feature?
