I used to use built-in panorama mode, but since learning to stitch my own panoramas I would never use it again , for several reasons:

* you're limited to great light conditions as you're moving the camera all the time. Long exposure is out of question. If you take individual shots and stitch them later, you can take as long exposure as you wish (on a tripod).

* it only does horizontal or vertical line panoramas. I often like to take 9 (3x3) or 12 (4x3) shots, so I can get a 4x3 or 16x9 shot after stitching.

* it outputs low-res jpeg, with individual photos you can get raw and better resolution

* you can use different projections when stitching photos, some work better than others in a given situations
