I would not worry about it and use it until you are ready to replace the camera. I am sure that a kid you know would love to have it when you are done with it.

I wonder what else could be causing the dull spot? Dust directly in the middle? I've done some more tests and the greyish zone definitely gets smaller and more intense the higher the aperture. It isn't noticeable below  f7.1. I'll have a look into the black ink method, though I am concerned that I would somehow do it wrong and end up with a black spot in the middle of the photos...
