Depends on your typical shooting - do you shoot longer focal lengths a lot, making the additional reach of the 15-85mm desirable? I actually went through the same decision process with these two lenses when deciding on a crop general-purpose zoom. I analyzed a few thousand pictures I had taken (mainly on travel) and found that I made heavy use of the 55-85mm range so I went with the 15-85. I have been very happy with it, finding the extra reach to be more useful for me than the faster but shorter lens. And at least with my copy of this lens, the IQ has been very good. I got the 18-135mm STM as part of a 70D kit buy but I found the results from the 15-85mm to be better (my subjective eye).

Hey, Dave. Because of weight restrictions on the flight, I took only my 7D + 15-85 on a weeks trip to Lake Garda, Italy. I was concerned about the lack of f/l, but I found I hardly missed the extra at all. A previous trip to the same place was with same set-up + 55-250. When I checked my photos on computer, I found only less than 10% were with a f/l over 100mm. I even got some sea birds in flight, which still looked good massively cropped. I love the lens.
