I currently use the 18-105mm kit lens as a walkabout on my D7100. looking for recommendations of a longer range, ie 18-200/300.

cheers

And I'm only half kidding. 18-140 is as far as I would go in a superzoom. Beyond that, why not go WAY beyond that?

I would never tell you not to express your opinion. But, I am also free to counter it. Though you are free to tell the world not to buy superzooms because of your experience, in my opinion it is important that folks have both sides of the argument so they can judge for themselves. I only shared after you and Stacey gave your negative opinions. The fact that I use and enjoy a superzoom indicates that, while you present the floor, I have evidence of a much higher ceiling. The floor may be real but that does not mean a ceiling does not exist.

Am I misunderstanding the term "superzoom".

My understanding of the term, was a lens going from wide to tele - at least about 10xzoom or above.

I don't see the 150-600mm in that category with it's 4xzoom - absolutely a lens, I would like to have and use. It's inside my normal acceptable range of about 5 times zoom as max.

Agree.

Though I never tell anybody, what to buy or not buy - or what to do/not do.

I do tell, what I would buy - not buy or do/not do. And most of the times, why :-)

I think it is DukeCC who misused the term. The Sigma 150-600 is a super-tele-zoom. It is the tele that is superlative, not the zoom.

Good - because all my posts regarding "superzooms" are related my understanding of that term - I could have a hard time, starting to explain my opinion from a view, that is not "official" :-)

I still use my 1st gen 18-200 VR on my D7200. It works fine. I'd take it over a bridge camera any day.

Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to reply. your arguments for and against have made me realise there re other options to be explored. cheers everyone
