23mm f2 - will it come to fruition? Looking for an ILC with pancake setup.
Apr 18, 2016
As some of you know, my current set up is a Sony a6000 w/16-70, a combo I love. There are many things I really like about it, however the poor JPEG engine despite the fact Raw gives me a lot to work with, is something that I find a real pain especially with shots that are indoors. Also, while the set up is not large by any stretch, I find I'm not taking my camera with me as much, especially to casual events. Nor am I taking it as a walkabout, so I'm thinking that while for Travel its great, I need something smaller.
So with that, I am contemplating getting a compact camera with 1" sensor and fast glass, and right now the Nikon DL24-85 looks promising but that won't ship until November, and in the digital world that is an eternity.
However I also want an ILC with great JPEG engine and small lenses to give me the low light ability but also the shallow DOF for creativity.
So, I'm thinking of this in terms of what I would use in Good Light, vs Indoor/Low Light.
Good Light
- 1" sensor compact should be good enough with good resolution as a general walkabout. Nikon DL would be my choice pending reviews as it has PDAF so tracking my kids for everyday and sports would be ideal. Plus it has 4k video and a touchscreen, things I like though I'd miss the EVF.
Indoor/Low Light
- ILC (thinking either keep my Sony a6000 and mount the 35 f1.8 OSS, or look at a Fuji X-M1 or E2 with the 23mm F2 (which is still at the rumour stage, but its a focal length I love recognizing the crop factor and FOV is 35mm).
My dilemma though is if I had the 1" fast glass compact, will I have too much overlap and simply not use the ILC with prime? I can see if the ILC package is small enough, that it would be my camera of choice indoors if it fits in a belt pouch. I'm thinking the X-M1 with 23mm f2 might fit that bill and that's also why I think I may have to sell my Sony a6000 due to the lack of good glass in pancake sizes. I am also making an assumption that the 23mm f2 would be the size of the 18 or 27mm pancakes versus the 35 f2, so major assumption there. I am also looking at the Canon EOS M3 with 22mm f2......

I know this is a fuji forum and I'll get some bias, but that's ok as I'm looking for opinions on what I'm considering and anyone who has contemplated the same. I want to always have a camera on me all the time so I think that is a key factor. I looked at the Zeiss 24 f1.8 but its too big still in my view for that purpose or even for casual events. A 23mm f2 pancake mounted to say an X-M1 would be a very small high IQ combo if that lens comes to fruition and is quality which I'd expect it to be coming from Fuji. I realize with the lens not yet existing I'm simply speculating however I think I've made my needs clear.
