That answer doesn't sound like it helps his understanding, sounds like saying we'll just sweep the complications under the rug.  Yes, as you say, you do calculate exposure the same way, and the exposure is the same, i.e. the brightness of the image is the same.  It's not wrong, but I don't think it helps anyone's understanding.  This leads to FF sensors are magically better syndrome when we start to ask why the FF shot has less noise if both are equally "fast".  FF sensors in reality often lag behind smaller format sensors.  Which then leaves the noise question unanswered unless we go back to the total amount of light again.
