They are only misleading when people think that f number is aperture.

If you have a film camera with ISO 100 film in it and the only thing you can change is the shutter speed and have 2 lenses of the same focal length, one being f2.8 and the other f5.9 and you need to use a faster shutter speed which is the fastest lens? Same for digital except that bringing ISO in causes great confusion.

My largest aperture lens is the slow 1200mm f 5.9 super zoom with an aperture of 203mm whilst my fastest lens is a f1.7 25mm but that is only 14.7mm.

Using the old 35mm film size as a standard for field of view in equivalent focal lengths is fine but pretty irrelevant for anything else. DPR plotting f numbers normalised to full frame equivalents but then calling them equivalent aperture only adds to the confusion.
