I have a Nikon d810, and i'm buying a flash for it next week. I'm pretty new to using flash, i'm all about natural light, but I need something to make my outdoor ceremony photos look a little better when shooting mid day, as well as a few portraits when shooting at mid day as well. I'm thinking about buying the SB-700 AF Speedlight. Should I get a soft box like the picture shown below? Or is it just a waste of money?

Also, any other accessories that I should get to go with it?

Hi,

you should also learn how to bouce your flash. That is what will get you the most flattering light.

There are some good tutorials here :http://neilvn.com/tangents/

(see Flash photography tecnhique on the right).

Have a good day!

If this is primarily for fill-in flash in daylight I wouldn't bother with the softbox. As someone else has said, you'll probably need as much power as you can muster. In fact, a small softbox like that has very little useful effect once you are more than a yard (metre) or so away from your subject.

Unless your camera & flash support HSS (high speed sync) consider getting at least a 3 stop neutral density filter to avoid shooting at very small apertures due to sync speeds being fairly low.

+ 1

I would restrict my use of such a small "softbox" (it's really just a diffuser) to run-and-gun shooting indoors. Which you may do a lot of? Different folks have different needs.
