EVF refresh rate of GX7 and GX8?
Apr 11, 2016
Hi everyone.
First, some background. My wife currently has an ageing Canon 450D and 60mm macro lens as her main "proper" camera. However, because of the weight/size, she has started to use it less. Her Canon G11 compact camera became faulty so she now has a Panasonic G1 + 12-32 as her carry anywhere camera. Given that I already have an assortment of M4/3 bodies and lenses, it makes sense for her to consider moving to M4/3 completely if she decides to downsize her main body.
She would prefer a fully articulated screen but also likes the idea of the tilting viewfinder in the GX7/GX8 as well for macro.
Now the problem. I have a Panasonic G5 which I no longer use so I suggested that she try that, as it does have an articulated rear screen. She is very sensitive to refresh rates and within a couple of minutes of using the EVF on the G5, she started to feel sick and almost developed a migraine. She mentioned how off-putting the lag in the display was, even before she started feeling ill. I assume that it is either the refresh rate that is too low for her or tearing/rainbow effects cause by the field sequential display used in the EVF.
She didn't have the same problem when she tried my EM-10 briefly.
Anyway, one option I had been considering was buying a GX7 for her before they disappear completely. However, I'm not sure if the refresh rate and general EVF quality is significantly better in the GX7 than the G5. As it is getting harder to source a new GX7, I'd have to buy it without her trying it but, given her experience with the G5, that might not be sensible. (Here in the UK, there is no trial period so could only return it if faulty. And as the second-hand prices aren't too far off the current new prices, I'd prefer to get it new.)
So, does anyone know if the refresh rate etc is significantly better in the GX7 than the G5? I'm sure the EVF in the GX8 is much better than the body it isn't hugely lighter/smaller than her Canon 450D.
Thanks!
