That is first thing to come to mind because:

- You see years old pictures in card, but none of the taken

- Recovery software can't find any taken pictures, just the old pictures

If there would be bad error, you couldn't even access the card as it wouldn't be recognized what so ever. If there would be damaged pictures, likely just the last or second last picture would be corrupted. And if just the most common error, card looks empty but everything is there and you get them with recovery software (that is the case 95.9999% of the times (rest is couple files corrupted))

- Never fill the card full. Always leave it 80% full. So swap cards often.

But, it is possible that the card partition data blocks has been corrupted and card is using an backup partition data blocks that overwrote everything. That would explain the directory structure but not missing files from taken, as those are written over everything legacy. And you can read the card content overriding the filesystem itself and then mapping data from the stream back to files.
