Two very different lenses. The kit lens is a zoom lens with varying aperture (3.5 to 5.6), the other is a fixed 50mm at a fixed 1.8 aperture. For things like low light situations, you're going to get nicer images with the "plastic fantastic" but if you need to zoom up to something in daylight, the kit lens will be more useful.

I sold my kit lens and bought a Sigma Contemporary 17-70, it has a slightly lower aperture setting at 17mm (2.8) and it makes a lot of difference in low light situations, and I like the image stabilization on the Sigma lens better than the Cannon's kit lens IS.

I like using both, and photography is often about using the lens the situation calls for!
