Time-Lapse with G9 X

I'm looking for some advice to improve a time-lapse video I'm trying to create. We are having a new pool installed so I thought it would be fun to create a video of the whole project. I am using a PowerShot G9 X, which has no intervalometer or true time-lapse function, and is not capable of running CHDK (yet). The only option I've found is to use the star time-lapse function. I set the parameters to record one shot per minute for an unlimited span and play at 29.97 fps. In reality, this runs somewhere around three hours before the battery dies. I'm fortunate enough to come home for lunch, so I put a fresh battery in and start again. I've gotten video from the first day to get an idea of what this produces. See:

(Let me know if the link doesn't work).

This video is actually in two parts from AM and PM. The AM part starts out OK, but becomes totally blown out once the sun is higher. The PM portion is much better in terms of exposure and color. I suspect this means the camera is metering the exposure when I first start the recording in the morning, while the light is still dim, and sticks with that exposure setting until I stop recording or the battery dies. Is that correct? It would certainly explain the blown exposure by mid morning.

Do you have any suggestions that would improve the end result? The best I can come up with is to start recording when I leave for work in the morning (around 7:30) and ask a family member to stop recording and restart later when the light is getting brighter. This requires a family member to be a little more comfortable with the gear than I can trust. I know pressing the red button then pressing it again isn't a huge feat, but it failed on day 2. Is there someway to get the G9 X to re-meter the exposure without stopping and starting again or to set the exposure manually in this mode? Is there anything I can do to push the battery time beyond three hours or so (estimating here)?

Thanks for any tips.

Dan
